Yoga poses for Longevity

Who does not want a long life, and this long life would be meaningful, if it is also a healthy life. Proper physical exercise enables you to keep your body in good health. An essential part in doing physical exercise is to stimulate the different glands in your body to function effectively. Yoga addresses this challenge quite effectively.

Within our body we have endocrine glands that release hormones into our system. We also have the adrenal glands near the kidneys, and the thymus gland beneath our breast bone, the thyroid glands near our throat, and the pituitary gland near the brain. If they function effectively, all these glands also help to improve metabolism, reduce stress and increase energy flow. All these combine to help you to life a healthy, active and long life. These glands have the overall effect of regulating and slowing down our process of ageing.

You start the sequence that stimulates these glands to secrete more effectively by sitting on a mat on your buttocks in a cross-legged position. Place your palms on your knees. Inhale and arch your back. Thrust your chest out and lift your chin a bit. Exhale and curve you back by drawing your belly button inside and lowering your head (and chin) to your chest. As you do this, ensure that you lift your pelvic muscles. By doing this you stimulate your reproductive organs.

Introduce a variation here by rotating your shoulders in a circular trajectory, as you inhale and exhale. Exhale as you curve your back and lean forward, and inhale as you arch your back and thrust your chest out. This simple and graceful movement also helps to stimulate the abdominal organs to secrete better.

Inhale and reach your arms up, and as you exhale, twist your spine and turn your shoulders to your right and then to your left as you raise and lower your arms with each inhalation and exhalation. Next, lower your arms to the mat and as you inhale, twist to your left. Place your right palm on your left knee and your left palm on the mat behind your back. Pause and then turn to your right and place your left palm on your right knee and right palm behind your back.

Through such a sequence you can activate most of your glands to secrete better. You can also incorporate the pigeon pose, twisted chair pose and fists of fire pose into this sequence.
