Patanjali Backbend Yoga pose

The Patanjali backbend Yoga pose is a sequence of advanced backbends that help you to nourish your spine and the muscles of your back.

You start from a kneeling position and stretch your left leg behind you, while keeping your right leg bent at the knee. Lift your arms up and stretch them upwards. Pause at this stage and then lift your outstretched left leg by bending it from the knee. Lower your arms and hold your left foot with your hands. Your back is now arched backwards.

Bring your left foot near your head. Lift your chin up, to touch the back of your head to the foot. Gradually lower your left leg and also take your left arm down along with the leg. This increases the curve of the spine and sharpens the backbend. Pause at this stage for between three to five breaths, or as long as you are comfortable and then exit this pose. This is a variant of the Pigeon pose.

You can proceed to do the Scorpion pose, which also gives you an extreme backbend. Be on all fours and lower your chest and head towards the floor, to rest on your elbows and forearms. Gradually lift your legs up and make your torso vertical. Stabilize yourself in this position and then lower your feet towards your head, giving your back a sharp curve. Lower your feet further to touch your foot soles to your head.

Stay in this position for between three to five breaths and then exit this pose. Lift your legs to make your torso vertical once again and then lower your legs to the floor.
