Shoulder Shrug

The Shoulder shrug of Restorative yoga is an excellent exercise to relieve you of the stiffness that accumulates in your shoulders as you sit all day at your desk, tapping away at your keyboard. This stiffness could eventually lead to shoulder related ailments like the frozen shoulder, shoulder dislocation, etc.

Doing the Shoulder Shrug is a good way to overcome the stiffness and nourish the muscles and joints of your shoulders. You start the shoulder shrug by inhaling deeply and lifting your shoulders towards your ears. As you do this you will draw your shoulders near yourself and lift them up a couple of inches towards your ears. You also curve your back to make it look like that of a tortoise. Curve your neck slightly and look up.

Pause at this position for a moment and then relax your shoulders to let them drop, as you exhale. When you drop your shoulders, let your arms also drop by your sides and let go off all the tension that you have accumulated in your shoulders. Bend your neck slightly and look down.

Repeat this movement for between seven to ten times, or as long as you find it comfortable. At the end of it you would have relieved the muscular tension in your shoulders, neck and upper back.
