Yoga Poses to Overcome Constipation


There are Yoga poses that help in overcoming constipation. By doing these poses you can reduce the use of laxatives and artificial agents to overcome constipation. These poses include the Uddiyana Bandha and Nauli, the Paschimottana asna (seated forward bend), the Tripod pose and other poses that require you to engage your abdominal muscles and draw your stomach inwards as you bend forward.



The Uddiyana Bandha and Nauli are basically procedures and do not involve any heavy exercise. To do the Uddiyana Bandha and Nauli procedure you have to stand erect on a mat. Ensure that you have kept your back erect, and your spine is not curved either to your right or left. Bend forward slightly from your hips and as you do so, also bend your legs from the knees. Place your palms on your thighs and inhale deeply followed by a long sustained exhalation. As you exhale, draw your stomach inwards.



You will need to draw your stomach inwards in two stages. First draw it inwards to take your belly button as far inwards as you can. Let your abdomen fall back against your back. Now apply slight downward pressure with your hands to pull your diaphragm upwards. Let your shoulders droop a bit as you pull your stomach inwards and then roll your hips in a circular trajectory and try to move your abdominal muscles. This movement can be learned only after considerable practice over a period of time. You will need to be patient as you slowly master this process.



As you move your abdominal muscles, all the organs within the stomach are massaged. As you large intestines too are massaged, it helps to overcome constipation. You will need to do this exercise on an empty stomach.



In addition to the Uddiyana Bandha and Nauli process, you can also do the Seated Forward Bending poses and the Tripod pose. These also help in compressing the abdomen and relieving constipation.
