Karnapidasana - Yoga Ear Pressing pose

The strange sounding Ear pressing pose is a yoga asana (pose) that gives exercise to virtually all parts of your body. It is a rather intricate pose to learn, but once you have mastered it, you can enjoy its many benefits. This pose nourishes you hips, spine, shoulders, neck, ribcage, abdomen, and also your quads, calf muscles, triceps and biceps.

The reason for this long list of benefits is the unique nature of this pose. To do the Ear pressing pose you hardly have to press your ears, but start from a supine position by lying down on your back. Your legs are straight down your hips and arms by your sides. Inhale, and stiffen the muscles of your back, and as you exhale, lift your feet off the floor. Keep your legs straight and lift them to bring them vertically up.

You will need to practice doing this movement over a few days as although it sounds simple, it would require you to hold your balance when you raise your legs. After you are used to lifting your legs and making them vertical, you will continue to bend your legs till you can bring your feet down to touch the floor behind your head. After you are able to do this, you need to bend your legs from the knees and rest your knees on the floor.

Bring your knees as close as possible to your ears. This move gives this pose its name, ‘Ear pressing pose’. When you are in this position, you compress your abdominal organs, and stimulate them to secrete better. This in turn improves your digestion as the liver secretes more bile. Your blood sugar levels are regulated as your pancreas secretes more insulin.
